TMJ Disorders

TMJ disorders — short for temporomandibular joint disorders — are issues with the joint that connects your jawbone and skull. TMJ disorders may cause soreness or pain:

  • Around the jaw
  • Around the ears
  • Around the temporomandibular joints
  • Other areas of the face

Other symptoms of TMJ may include:

  • Difficulty chewing
  • Clicking or locking in the jaw
  • Difficulty opening your mouth

While there are many different types of TMJ disorders with a number of different causes, the most common include injuries, arthritis, and normal wear and tear. Many people experience TMJ disorders with no issues. However, if a TMJ disorder is causing you pain or negatively affecting your quality of life, you should talk to your dentist about possible solutions.
